Welcome Back!

Coming back from maternity leave is not easy.  In fact, it’s something I dreaded after the birth of my first son. I remember looking at the calendar with nervous anticipation as each day passed knowing that I was one day closer to returning to work, one day closer to leaving my sweet little baby at home.  The prospect of being confined to my role as a cog in a corporate machine that was not sensitive to work-life balance made me feel trapped and unfulfilled in the weekly grind.Fast forward 3 years to last week when I returned from maternity leave for the second time.  It was still tough READ MORE ››

Only You Can Stop Word Crimes

Grammar nerds rejoiced last week when Weird Al Yankovic released with parody of the 2013 smash summer hit Blurred Lines, with his linguistically delightful song and video about Word Crimes. His opening verse states:If you can't write in the proper wayIf you don't know how to conjugateMaybe you flunked that classAnd maybe now you findThat people mock you onlineHe goes on to skewer text speak, the inability to understand homophones and using quotation marks as emphasis. Stand and Deliver

When we opened the Brilliant Ink NYC office earlier this year, one thing we made sure to get were desks that would allow us to stand while we’re working (check out the photo at left to see one of our desks “in action”). Don’t get me wrong – we don’t stand and work ALL day, but it is nice to have the option to stand up for periods of time throughout the day. There’s a wealth of evidence showing it’s not healthy to sit all day, and I also find it’s a great way to boost my energy and focus, particularly when I’m hitting that late afternoon slump. But if standing desks were the hot thing a year READ MORE ››
