Why It’s Okay to Take a Break

Recently I had a serious case of not feeling motivated. It was one of those days where I woke up feeling like I had already hit a wall…and I wanted to wear yoga pants and nap at my desk. You too? If you know me, you know that I actually like wearing real pants! I’m not a lycra-all-day kind of person. So, if you ever find yourself in a similar position, I’ve got some advice for you.  

 

Don’t fight it. Beating yourself up for not feeling motivated is the last thing you should do. My advice? Accept that some days are simply going to be more productive than others and move on. The faster you do this, the faster you’ll get back into your old groove.  

 

Take a close look at how you’re spending your time. Carefully consider what you’ve been working on lately. Does it feel like low-impact work? Are you basically stuck in a busy trap? What if you delegated more or enlisted some support on bigger projects? Sometimes, all it takes is a small tweak to a project —delegation or pushing back with poise where needed—to feel refreshed.  

 

Switch up your scenery. Taking a walk outside, working from a quiet coffee shop (not at your usual desk or workspace), or turning off your phone for 30 minutes can work wonders on your mood and creativity. Even if you don’t necessarily make any genius break-throughs, you’ll be more likely to be at ease and recharged. That’s exactly what you need to feel more motivated again.   

 

Once you’re back on the motivation train, it’s time to pass it on.
