Diversity in the Workplace

41% of managers say that they’re “too busy” to implement diversity initiatives. Diversity and inclusion in the workplace is a hot topic these days–one that not everyone understands how to initiate. There are many advantages to having a diverse workplace–new business opportunities and a wider talent pool just to name a few. Racially diverse teams outperform non-diverse teams by 35%.

Here’s how to start actually creating, enforcing, and fostering a sense of diversity and inclusion at your office. Whether you’re the boss or an employee, you can enact change.

1. Set clear goals.
Define what diversity means to you and your team or company. Once you set goals, you can then start to develop a diverse hiring strategy. You should define diversity, set goals, and then work backwards on what you can start doing now to achieve those goals.

2. Use your current employees and resources to your advantage.
Ask employees for their feedback and opinions. You want to know how they feel. Talk to local organizations such as churches, youth groups, colleges, clubs, and cultural institutions to start making connections for future partnerships and resources.

3. Provide adequate training.
No one wants to feel like they’re filling a quota. You want your employees to understand that you hiring the best people for the position and not just checking a box. Providing diversity training is necessary so that everyone understands the process and is on the same page.

4. Offer culturally sensitive benefits.
These benefits could include childcare, flexible holidays, and inclusive dress code. Understanding your work environment can help you navigate which benefits would suit your needs best.

5. Set up mentorship programs or affinity groups.
Programs like this will make your tenured and new employees feel at home and more included in the company culture.

6. Be willing to make changes.
Schedule exit interviews to learn what you could improve and what you’re great at already. In other words–think like a chicken, and be self-aware.
